Types of SMA Connectors
Understanding the different SMA connector types is essential for selecting the right one for your application. Here are the most common variations:
1. SMA Male vs. SMA Female
SMA Male (Plug): Features external threads and a center pin. Typically cable-mounted and serves as the movable half of the connection.
SMA Female (Jack): Has internal threads and a center socket. Usually fixed to panels or PCBs, providing mechanical stability.
2. SMA Plug vs. SMA Jack
SMA Plug: The detachable connector half, usually mounted on cables.
SMA Jack: The fixed connector, often panel or PCB-mounted, designed to withstand vibration and mechanical stress.
3. Reverse Polarity SMA (RP-SMA)
RP-SMA connectors reverse the gender of the center pin and sleeve to comply with regulatory requirements (e.g., FCC rules for Wi-Fi equipment). They look similar but are incompatible with standard SMA connectors, preventing unauthorized antenna modifications.
